I want to ride my bicycle……

Do you know if 5 per cent of UK SMEs donated one day’s revenue a year, it would raise an extra quarter of a billion pounds for good causes?

Did you also know there are over 3,500 charities and voluntary groups in Derbyshire alone?

I am a trustee of an amazing charity, Annabel’s Angels, that provides people undergoing cancer treatment, with small financial grants. 200 families have benefited already in the 5 years that Annabel’s Angels have been operating. Not bad for a team of just 9 Trustees!

But someone in the Uk is diagnosed with cancer every 2 minutes , and I wanted to do more…Annabel’s Angels do so much, but applications are growing…

Together we can and  must make a difference.

So I reached out to some business friends, and soon a 193km cycling challenge was created.  Together with Derbyshire Institute of Sport, we are looking for teams (or solo riders) to cycle just 193 km this month (April) and raise money for both organisations. It doesn’t matter if you raise money alone, or as a team, on the road, or in the gym. Just get sponsored!

We already have teams throughout the region, and even as far afield as Mallorca (thanks, Dean Jackson from Huub and David Torrington from Sky Recruitment Solutions), raising funds.

I have even chipped in (although I have always said “I don’t do sport….”), clocking up 85 miles over 5 hours 25 minutes so far.

Over the weekend of 12 April, my team will ride our 193km – on the road and in the University of Derby’s gym.  My team mate Jemma is also a cancer survivor, having beaten ovarian cancer a decade ago following the birth of her son (whose arrival quite possibly saved her life).  She is 40 this year this challenge is just one of her celebrations! She was the first to say “Yes”.

Our overall campaign total is currently £1,611.79, but as important is the raised awareness of what Annabel’s Angels and Derbyshire institute of Sport do – both vital community organisations who support local people here in our City and County.

For them.  This is for them…

Now…where are my padded shorts…and yellow jersey #lance
